Used Stainless Steel Process Tanks: A Buyer Inspection Guide
A practical inspection guide for used stainless steel process tanks, storage tanks and mixing vessels.

Used stainless steel process tanks are widely applied in food, beverage, pharmaceutical and chemical projects. To make a useful comparison, define the storage or process duty first: capacity, product, temperature, pressure, agitation, insulation and the required inlet and outlet connections.
Product, volume and batch cycle.
Material, geometry and insulation.
Nozzles, valves, manways and legs.
Inspection, loading and installation.
Start with the process role
A vertical storage tank, jacketed mixing vessel and pressure-rated receiver may all be described as a tank, yet their engineering needs differ substantially. Confirm working and design pressure, vacuum duty, internal finish, jacket requirements and whether the unit will be used for storage, blending, buffer service or fermentation.
Inspect both interior and exterior condition
Request photographs of the interior, welding, manway, nozzles, legs, insulation cladding and nameplate. Look for corrosion, pitting, altered connections, missing valves and damaged support points. Dimensions and transport weight are particularly important for oversized vessels, where loading method and destination access can affect the project cost.
Check fittings and line integration
List the existing inlet, outlet, CIP, vent, level and sampling connections. Compare them with your piping plan before purchase. It is usually easier to price a controlled modification before shipment than to discover an incompatible nozzle layout during installation.
